Media's transformation of Rape

Goal:The goal of this wiki is to raise awareness of media's transformation of rape from it being the perpetrators fault into it being the victims fault.
The victim is often looked at as "wanting" or "asking" for it; usually in regaurds to how she was dressed at the moment or the number of sexual partners she has had. Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, suggested that to remain safe, "women should avoid dressing like sluts." Just because a woman is wearing tight clothing does not make her a slut, or want to be raped. Media's representation of men and women come down to this; prevalent in media of all types are young, pretty, sexual woman and men that are sexual agressors. According to Ward, "Protrayls of women as sex objects and of men as sexual predators are common in many rap and rock music, videos and video games". Shamelessmag.com, a magazine for feminists and transgendered women, show statistics on media and it's protrayal of rape and women. According to the magazine, there are over 179 movies in which women are shown being raped or sexually assaulted. Hollywood has allowed rape scenes or rape gestures in everything from comedies to action movies. "Hollywood has turned rape into a punchline", says Michelle Schwartz of Shameless magazine.
Actions would be informational campaigns, community organizations such as "Slut Walk" and taking political action. Informational campaigns are going to be how to prevent rape, what to do if you have been raped, how to survive, after care and changing what cna be allowed in movies and tv shows. The Slut Walk raises awareness in how it's not the victims fault and taking political action would change the statue of limitations on rape and making the consequence even more extensive.

Actions: In order to raise awareness and change the policy on rape, the first place you could start would be talking to already established supporters, such as the people of RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network). RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. A big part of RAINN is preventing rape and sexual assault before it happens. They intend to do this through education through entertainment such as the media, college outreach programs and survivors education communities. Scott Berkowitz is the president of RAINN. Another large organization is Just Yell Fire. Just Yell Fire is a 1.5 Million girl revolution across 63 countries, combating violence against women. Founder, Dallas Jessup should be contacted for information on programs.
In order to set up awareness programs both Dallas Jessup and Scott Berkowitz. Both provide educational programs for women and men of all age groups and programs centered on what to do if you are ever in that situation (self defense, etc).
In gaining the communities interest, the first step would be to show them statistics on rape. No one really thinks about it till it either happens to them or they see that it is indeed a problem. In order to do this, posting in a local newspaper about a new community group would be beneficial. Putting up flyers, making phone calls to legislation, etc could all spark interest. Meetings would organize educational, self defense and safety programs for both women and men. Raising awareness through these programs and possibly public outings would be beneficial. Another important part would be talking with the media about putting restrictions on rape scenes, etc. RAINN would be a good place to start because they already reach out to the media with accurate statistics and relevant messages about sexual assualt. Truth About Rape, a campaign of women, fights to challenge the myths about rape and change how media represents rape.

Testifying to congress misinterpretations of rape and consequences of the policy of rape is also very beneficial. Getting active in state and federal governments is a good way to start improving the system.
